I'm a 24 yr old and I work in the food industry (fast food). I don't hate my job and I actually quite enjoy working in the industry. I've been working towards a promotion to assistant manager right now. Over the past few weeks I've been averaging 50 hours a week.
I go in early, I stay late as much as possible. I left “early” yesterday because of a bad stomach ache. I was scheduled until 230 pm but stayed until 330. Overall the job treats me well, although I do work too much (my choice, they do not force me to). I could get paid more but it's not terrible.
The point is, I've missed many family functions. Some due to work, some not. I've missed father's day and mother's day with my SO's family. They are planning a get together on the 4th which I desperately want to attend. I am scheduled with another manager to open the store that day 830 to 6pm. He is scheduled to 5 pm. The closing manager comes at 6.
I really want to attend this event. I need some time with my family, and I can't bear to miss another get together. I don't have many friends so this is important to me.
How can I ask my manager/superior to make this happen, without coming off the wrong way? I have never missed a shift before, should I just call off if I can't switch with anyone that day?
Obviously work takes alot from me, but I don't want to be an ass about this of course. Any advice is appreciated.
