NLP was a big fad in the 80s/90s. I read some of Bandler’s books in the 2000s because there was a bit of a revival but I kind of left it on the side. I can recognize it very easily but didn’t care about it because I could see many attempts to use it don’t actually work.
I’ve worked with a bunch of people who got into management or sales during that period and many try to use NLP in ham-fisted ways in daily life. The least subtle was a salesman I worked with who would literally try to mimic my every move and once asked if he could test if I was “visual, auditory or kinetic.” He came off more than a little creepy and I was glad to part ways with him.
I work with another contemporary salesperson with a thick pile of NLP style books on her shelf who is constantly trying to reframe things away. I’m miserably sick because a relative was sick at Thanksgiving. I log on as a courtesy this morning while basically spelling out I’m not going to be on for long. She starts stating she’s glad I’m not that sick and have logged on like she’s going to hypnotize me into not feeling that sick. Wrong – logged off because believe it or not, people are actually sick from Thanksgiving after the first year many people felt comfortable not taking precautions. Jedi mind trick fail.
