Anyone have experience working with horizontal leadership?

The org I work for is considering transitioning to “horizontal leadership” Boss is stepping down and pulling up 3 of staff members to divvy his role/ tasks. This comes with a pay increase for everyone. Sounds like a good idea in theory but I wonder what it’s actually like in practice. If you have experience with something like this I would like to hear what you think.
