Anyone know if hiring paperwork has an expiration?

Or in other words, can a company revoke your hired status if you don't do something on your end by a certain date? I used to do hiring so I'm familiar with I-9 and the whole 3 day thing, but that's never given me cause to tell someone they'll just have to wait for the next time we have positions open. Seems shady to me, but it's also been a few years since I've applied to jobs. Did I dogde a bullet here or am I looking into this too much?
