As a Western European, I think I’m starting to understand why people say life isn’t that great in NYC

I did some research, and apparently the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in New York, NY is currently $3500…in most places in France, Germany, the Uk, Italy or Spain, this amount of money (3000 euros roughly), as a salary, would put you in the top 20% earners (I'm not kidding). JUST the freakin' rent…wow… Now I don't know what the cost of life is like apart from that in New York City, but if you add insurances, healthcare, food, transport, clothes, bills yada yada yada well damn it makes sense that people would make so much money there. I've often wondered how crazy it was that so many people were making 100k plus as a salary down there, but it seems like there's a good reason for that, and maybe some people who are doing pretty well for themselves still have trouble saving money despite their decent situations.
