Asked for a raise.

I have been with a company for five years. Overall, my performance is satisfactory. I was asked by management to move to a different shift to assume more responsibilities. I asked them for a pay raise, since I would lose money from a shift differential and because they were wanting me to take on additional responsibilities. The manager told me that he would rather hire a new employee off the street at a higher pay rate than to give any employee a raise. So I immediately gave my notice. I wanted to tell him to fuck off and immediately quit, but I have bills I need to pay. I'm getting worried though, because I haven't received a call back from any other job I applied at and only have savings for three months.
