I recently had a meeting with my boss asking for a raise. I work as a ft copywriter making $23/hr with no benefits. While I have a few years of experience, I've only been at this company for 10 months.
During the meeting, my boss seemed super receptive and agreed with all my points and data that showed average pay for our area is substantially higher. He also asked me not to discuss my salary with any of my coworkers.
That was last week. This week, I followed up and was told that I would receive a raise… at my one year mark, and they don't know how much that will be.
When I asked if there was room to negotiate an earlier raise, I was told that that was never on the table and he thought I was talking about the one year raise during the initial meeting. He said they don't do raises outside annual reviews, which I know isn't true from experience.
He went on to say that although website data shows my pay is below average, his experience in the industry is that I'm actually paid very fairly. He finished off the meeting by asking if I am in some sort of financial trouble and thats why I'm pursuing a raise.
This whole thing has felt really sketchy to me. I've had a great relationship with my boss prior to this, but I'm just not sure how to feel at the moment. Looking for advice, I guess.
