So I'll start off by saying this is all happening to my friend.
She works in HR doing more operational things for a relatively new but big company. The company has thousands of employees but the HR team is comprised of just a few individuals. The Director of HR is friends with COO and can seemingly do whatever she would like. For instance, she went into the system and gave her self a raise, and when the issue was brought up to the COO, he dismissed it.
There is a whole list of other questionably ethical things she has said and done, but the events of last night really rubbed me the wrong way and I'm curious to what you all think.
Last night my friend got a text on her personal cell phone at 10PM. She was instructed by the director that she was needed to be online as soon as possible. This led to her logging on and working until midnight. I don't know the whole context of the task, but apparently it is something the director has known about for over a week.
After completing the task, the director then scheduled a meeting for 5:30 AM the next day (or same day if we are being technical about midnight). The director says that all salary employees should be available to work when needed and are expected to work nights and weekends if needed. Since my friend is salary and not hourly, she'll receive no additional compensation for these hours.
Obviously, this is not a good working environment. She can't really report the director to anyone else in the company and she's nervous about being fired if she isn't available. The company is an At Will Employer which apparently means neither the employee nor employer is required to give notice of termination (I'm not sure if this means they can find a BS reason also).
So my friend can't afford to lose her job and doesn't have another one lined up just yet. She feels like she is forced to bend over backwards for this director and the director has no one to keep her accountable. Other than just getting out of this company asap, does she have other options?
