My job let go of 50 people last year before sending the entire workforce to work remotely.
They fired them all at once in a giant zoom meeting. They didn't tell any of the other staff and it was chaos. Basically, let go of everyone they hired in the last few months because “we just don't have the traffic anymore”.
Cut to yesterday. Job let go of 50 more people. The only warning was an email inviting them to a zoom call, and some employees didn't find out until trying to clock in for their shift later in the day. As my employer fires based on seniority, I was honestly amazed I wasn't on the chopping block. They didn't just let go of lower-level employees, they let go of a supervisor and my position is the middle man between the two groups.
TODAY in, once again, a mass zoom call I and my other coworkers of the same title are informed our hours are being cut from 40 to 30, the minimum they can schedule us without taking away our benefits. I should be happy, right? At least I still can go to the doctor if I need to.
My anger is settling in more and more because not only are they cutting our hours, the change starts TOMORROW and I now have to face the fact that I won't be able to pay any of my bills anymore. I make $15/hr in this position, I work in constant fear that I'll be the next one to go, my immediate boss is toxic and has weaponized me against my other coworkers so I only have two people I'm remotely close to (the third was part of the layoffs).
But whatever because at least they were able to not fire me right?
