Curious on antiwork’s take on the movie Whiplash. A movie about a mostly abusive but also at times caring coach/teacher’s attempt on bringing out the best of an artist. Under extreme situation. I thought maybe it's time to share some spicy memories of when I worked on the suicide line. I cannot disclose a lot so please forgive that aspect due to privacy. Let me tell you that we do not get paid enough. Part-time day staff got 10/hour, full time day got 12/hour, and all night shift was full time at 15/hour. Hey y’all, I own a small bakery and have one full time employee and one part time that only works 2 weekdays currently. Generally, I try to schedule my FT off for a full weekend every other week. On the between weeks, I only schedule them for one weekend day. So, if they had this whole weekend off, they’d work either Saturday or Sunday next week. Would it be a lot to ask to have them come in on another weekend day instead of a weekday? Weekend are our busiest time and it’s hard for me to work them alone, but I also want to give them a good work/life balance. I don’t need there help as much on weekdays, but I also want to make sure I give them enough work hours. When I worked in a bakery, I worked every weekend and didn’t mind it too much given…

I teach at a community college, and I see a lot of the sort of disrespect people experience by bosses replicated by professors, who claim they are “preparing students for the workplace.” This leads to so much abuse- inflexible due dates, refusing to excuse legitimate absences, using invasive apps to watch students. To me, a better way to prepare students for the workplace is to help students to learn to value their lives and families and joy above my class. I have a flexible late policy, don't ask for any proof for excuses absences, or when students are late to class, let students negotiate assignments and classroom conditions and generally encourage students to advocate for themselves. What else can I change in my class to be more anti-work?
