One (of few) things I have become really good at is finding computer science jobs. CS is not for everyone and I know big tech is dystopian in its own way but these hourly jobs are killing you all and this is all I know. You are treated so shitty for so little thanks and such unfair compensation. We will keep fighting to be treated and paid fairly, but in the meantime, pivoting to computer science or a desk job may help some of you. For the others, just disregard. I know many can't afford college (or have already gone), but there may be a path even without it. Do you like puzzles? Decent at algebra? Do you like web stuff and visuals? CS may be for you and isn't as hard as you might think. You can pick it up in your spare time, and it is actually fun.…

Legal question about a promotion.
Ok so I am 17 turning 18 and have worked in my job for just under one year. I recently applied for and received a promotion our HR department is supposed to process it next week. However one of my managers told me today that I need a drivers license which I do not have. I mentioned that the application asks if you have a License and I said no and he said HR might still turn it down despite that I was already offered the job. Is that legal? Do I have any options?
If you prefer remote work and need help selling the idea to management, plan deliverables that complete a milestone to be completed while remote. One of the biggest barriers to remote work, if you're interested in doing so, is managers who are concerned about productivity or control over the office; When you are remote, it is a lot harder to know exactly what everyone is doing so it requires a certain level of trust between parties. Completing these milestones on time and conveying that message while remote can help address this by adding positive touchpoints in the setting of your choice.
The way I see it, the whole point of AI and automation is to free humans from menial tasks and unskilled jobs so we can TRULY contribute something to the world instead of doing mindless, repetitive, automatable work. Because the one thing we can do that can't be automated is create, and NOBODY has no talent at all. But instead of using modern tools with a view to reinvesting the money saved through technology in humanity to uplift everyone from the bottom up the wealth is hoarded, which ultimately screws us all because who knows what talent we're letting slip through the cracks of capitalism because they're tied to worthless jobs or are otherwise denied opportunity. It's like dude, if you can get a machine to pick all the grapes and now you don't need people to do that why not invest that savings in training workers for better positions…
I had to beg them to fire me…
So I've been waiting for the right time to sit down and type out my experience being a federal contractor working at Amtrak (yes that railroad) for almost a decade and I think it's finally that time. When I was hired (after applying for 2.5yrs and having my mother pull some strings for me, yay nepotism) I was so ecstatic about the $10/hr pay raise that I would be receiving that they could have asked me to jump in front a train (haha) and I would have done it. Ten years later (and a BS in Acquisition and Contract Management) and my pay has only increased about 30%, all of that purely negotiated between the different unions and the corporation. Twice, my union (Transportation and Communications, TCU) has let our contract lapse, only to take more rights away from the workers when we did sign a new one. Since Amtrak…

levels of greed where I work. CEO told us we're expected to provide exponential growth yearly…like is Scrooge McDuck on the board?
I was talking to a coworker (C) when the only woman (M) on our shift comes up and says she is going to the bathroom. C complained about how much she goes to the bathroom which I brushed off because he complains about everything. Then he told me our manager asked him to monitor M's bathroom breaks and if she is going too frequently to not let her go. C said that since he wasn't paid a supervisors salary that he wasn't going to do it. M doesn't go more frequently than anyone else on shift but she always let's someone know when she does go which no one else does. I told her what happened as soon as she got back and she is reviewing her options.
Work guilt
Even though I’m at my wits end with work and even though I try so hard not to care, I feel so guilty for not finishing my tasks today. I didn’t finish due to the lack of time and due to the fact that we are short handed and training a new person. I feel like I should have stayed an hour later because I took a half day on Monday. I hate work guilt!
Should I take this job?
I'm currently looking for a new job as my current one isn't providing enough hours. I had a job interview this week and after mentioning I was looking for a four day work week they immediately mentioned that a weekend shift is required, basically telling me it wasn't an option. I will also have to wear a wig at all times because my current hair color isn't allowed (pink) and hair color significantly impacts my mental health so I can't change it. Finally they said that there is no leave allowed at all in December, and while I don't go on holiday then typically, it just rubs me the wrong way like they have no care for their employees. I have no qualifications so I can't really make demands as there are so many other people they could hire instead of me
