I got a new job making 90k in Atlanta, coming from Florida with no income tax. 5% income tax plus local now, significant other lost her job, and now with inflation/housing surge, houses are up 25-55% so renting an ordinary 2 bedroom home is more than half my pre-tax paycheck…. On top of that my mother has cancer and is disabled can't walk so I'm having to create a go fund me to beg for money to get her a POWER wheelchair since Medicare pays nothing at all to help. They argued that she needs to rip up the carpet and get hardwood floors which costs like 9k. My dad can't possibly push around a wheelchair in the house. My coworker's ill mother suddenly passed the other day. She passed on a Wednesday. My other coworkers and I were discussing when we think she'll be back. I go “oh I would assume at least a month-” and then they all started laughing. For context I'm in the UK but I'm sure this happens elsewhere. I'm fortunate enough to be in quite a comfortable office job and get on well with my colleagues there. We were talking about previous jobs on a lunch break once and someone was telling me about her role as a manager at JD Sports (clothing/sportswear chain store). I genuinely couldn't believe how much shit she was responsible for. Managing multiple floors, security, ensuring everything was pristine, hitting ridiculous KPIs. Everyone can have their own discussions below but I’ve been on this sub for some time now and I see people when they are working a job that mostly relies on tips as a source of income always complain about not getting tips. Look I understand it may have been the only job available to you but as far as I’ve seen this sub is dedicated to get paid what your worth and don’t cater to big business. That is what your doing when you work a top job. Your choosing to make people like you and I pay for your wages instead of the company actually just paying you a livable wage. To start English is not my first language and I don’t live in the US. So a few weeks ago I had an accident and I broke a few bones on my right leg, my doctor gave me a 15 day sick leave, since it wasn’t that bad I decided to still go to work, but as soon as I arrived to work they sent me back home, I tried telling them that I didn’t want the sick leave because that means that I will only be paid 50% of my salary during my sick leave but there was nothing I could do.
