I feel like I can't trust my boss's guidance anymore. Background:I've been drifting throughout the country and taking jobs in different places to slow travel and see the country. It's been very nice having traveled so many places and seen so much but it's come at the cost of not having been somewhere long enough to develop an expertise in that job's niche and the relationships that come with time in these areas. It's left me with some esteem items that I look to validate through work and a deep seated loyalty to people who care about me. Fast forward to graduation from college, I took a job with a company with the understanding I'd be there for the long haul, getting broad exposure to many niches in my field and having the benefit of putting down roots. My manager is swearing up and down about all the great things…

I see too many posts about people giving 2 weeks notice and then shit happens. They try to get your new job to not hire you, or they decide to fire you (when you planned to work those 2 weeks and need the money). You have no responsibility to a company to give them 2 weeks and it can only hurt you. You should always be thinking of yourself. When it's time to go, you go!
PSA: nobody can “make you keep working”
I have only read two posts today and both mentioned their manager “made them keep working”. No one can make you stay somewhere unless you are being detained or under the threat of violence! Yes, losing your job might be devastating financially but if there is a threat of you being physically harmed by the work or you witnessed something disturbing.. you don’t need permission to leave!! (You may know what posts I’m talking about and I have nothing but sympathy for those OPs) I do understand if you’re under stress you might just blindly do whatever you are told. But you can 100% just walk out and not continue putting yourself in danger. From another IRL story of someone I know: even if you work in a secure facility with medical staff who tell you you’re fine- you can STILL leave. You have a right to call an ambulance.…

I’m taking the leap and getting out
Due to reasons, I've been working soul-sucking jobs the past couple of years. I've gotten by but I haven't been happy. I'm a mechanic by trade and found a “shop” willing to bring me in. Essentially just a couple guys with a garage and a reputation of doing solid work. No benefits but I get to work when I want, as long as I want, no red tape to dance around, and I get paid for the work I do (minus splitting the overhead between us). The only rules are “do proper work” and “don't be lazy on the job”. I'll be paid in cash per job. I'll make as much money as I'm willing to work for. I'll pay taxes on the amount I feel like reporting. It's literally all up to me now. Wish me luck.
This is so dystopian. Why is the employer in my bedroom? https://preview.redd.it/0z21koitlmh81.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a8e6a943d3742ac8c39d6fc69a4f877ddc54b1a
