“Workerism” is stupid and counterproductive (and, in its more intellectually developed forms, based on a misunderstanding of socialism and Marxist theory)

By “workerism” I mean what others sometimes call “producerism” or “populism” – a rhetorical glorification of the worker, of the nature of being a worker, often coupled to hostility towards the lumpenproletariat (the long-term, often criminal unemployed). The “Actually Existing Socialist” States were all workerist (without at all being socialist). The point of socialism and of Marxism is indeed to abolishes labor. Lenin can talk about how 'he who does not work, neither shall he eat' all he likes: Marx felt differently: The modern state, the rule of the bourgeoisie, is based on freedom of labour …. Freedom of Labour is free competition of the workers among themselves…. Labor is free in all civilized countries; it is not a matter of freeing labor but of abolishing it. (The German Ideology) Gilles Dauvé took this logic to its inevitable conclusion: All theories (bourgeois, fascist, Stalinist, Labourite, left-wing, or far-leftist) which somehow…

We’ve had high turnover at my company for a while and it’s started to become a trend for departing employees to disclose their pay before leaving. I honestly wasn’t surprised to find out that pay is almost entirely dependent on how desperate the company is to get new bodies in the door at the time.

Stay with me, it gets messed up. I work in IT, and management claims that pay is determined by education, certifications, experience, time with the company etc. Which are all things that my coworkers and I discussed with each other prior to me approaching management. I started before the contract began at $16 and change. Expectations were high and everyone was excited to get started…. We got REKD. No one was prepared for the workload that got dropped on us. Management scrambled trying to bring in as many people as they could as quickly as possible. People from the company who previously held the contract (who were snubbed after being promised positions) were offered positions, keeping their pay (between $23 and $26). They brought in others who were completely new, with similar experience to me (no certs, no degree, a couple of years of experience) at $19 and change. Anyway,…

I have one body; but I fulfill the roles of being a project coordinator, website maintenance officer, and museum administrator. My pay? Just for one. And boss wants me to answer 24/7.

The title says it all. I'm so furious rn. I don't know how to cope. Obviously, some will say “leave”, but I can't. I have a family to support and I'm the breadwinner so they depend on me. This is killing me. She's just rude — whenever I can't respond to a text or call, she'll contact one of my emergency contacts right away. Can't she understand that I am fulfilling three roles? And she does not even paying me for that three roles. I'm stuck between leaving and staying. Just have to stay bec job market is bad bec of covid.

Why do I even feel bad?

Long story short I work for basically a mom and pop pizza shop as a delivery driver. Been here for almost 1.5 years, and i’m going to school. Anyways, we had a massive influx of people quit and because of that we have new people coming in and help from other stores to help as well. Here’s the stupid part, they are changing how the store is organized, and ran. The new management are control freaks with micro managing and always having something additional to say. And today the straw that broke the camels back was they increased our workload as “others weren’t doing their job right, so now you have a longer list”. So everyone is pissed off, and the amount of disrespect given is not even ok. But long story short I got into a yelling match with one of said managers, and they told me to “get…

Manager wants me out of the workplace!

A few months back I have been asked by my manager to move to a different department without any company process or procedure just so he could get his buddy into my position. When I refused because I like my current position and like the guys I work with I was threatened with low performance reviews, Constant harassment for months on end, manager tarnished my reputation in the workplace when he went to the project director to talk about how insubordinate and a bad worker I am (For clarity I hold more qualifications than my manager). Couple of months ago I found out that the ten employees under my supervision have been moved under his buddy without any process and I was called into a meeting to be told again to move desk to a different department outside the scope of my current role. My question is what are my…

Working at a Storage Unit company, but they also own the apartment you live in.

This is mid 2010 decade. I worked as a manager for a storage unit company for 4 years, and is the one of the biggest in the nation. The logo likes the color orange but that's all I'll say. I was hired in at something like $9.25 with a $0.25 or $0.50 raise after 90 days or 180 days. The job responsibilities are many, and only 1 person worked at the store per 8hr shift (I worked there 5 days a week and had like tuesday and wednesday off). It was a retail job 100% handle to the customer side of rental agreements, late rent (deliquency) calls, confirming appointments, and sales. This job is 100% high pressure sales to people who 85% of the time were in a desperate situation. Also, they called you a manager because you had to manage the cleanliness of the facility, the storage units, and…

I was asked to attend six 30 minute interviews without being told pay range.

I recently applied to a job where I did a 30 minute zoom interview. It went well and I was then asked to attend six 30 minute interviews in person. I was given two days notice for these interviews. The person I communicated with directly following the initial interview was dead set on scheduling me. Given the salary range was not listed in the job posting, and that was a major commitment considering I currently possess a job, I asked respectfully for a pay range prior to interviews in the interest of everyone’s time. I was then ignored and asked to split the interviews into two days. Before committing, I respectfully asked again about salary and was informed that compensation information was above the scheduling persons pay grade. I was then asked by the supervisor my message was forwarded to what my pay range was. After answering, I was informed…
