My (former) company instituted a “vacation” policy to fight back against employees taking time off due to illness/injury.

In response to several people calling in sick, the company I just left instituted a “vacation” policy. Everyone is paid hourly with the only exception being management. Hourly workers have no paid time off PERIOD. The people who called in did so for multiple reasons: One was in a (no-fault) car accident and her doctor begged her to take time off, one got the flu, and then I got COVID-19. As fate would have it we all called in within the space of a few weeks, and clearly management did not like that. A few days after I turned in my two weeks notice we were all told about a new “vacation” policy. Everyone is now limited to two weeks of (unpaid) vacation and five (unpaid) sick days. But wait, there's more! If we use up our five sick days, it gets deducted from our vacation! Wow! How generous! Sarcasm…

UK employer offering to hire me at 55 hours/week, 6 days/week for £24k. This doesn’t seem ok.

I'm currently in the US looking to move to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa. My wife and daughter are in the UK and I have no way of moving to the UK otherwise and we don't want to live in the US. Wife also can't work and I have no savings. While I respect the guy I've been talking to regarding the job because he'd be hiring me as a favor, the work schedule just reminds me so much of one of the reasons why my wife and I chose to not have a life in the US in the first place – the abhorrent work-life balance and work culture. The job is also an apprenticeship in conveyor belt engineering, if that matters. Idk how things work in the UK but is this normal? Am I supposed to be ok with working 55 hours a week, 6 days…

proud of you for realizing non-violent civil disobedience & boycotts are two of the only non-violent protest tactics that get results

you could rage & kill the nazis who keep us down but you know that would only bring harsher crackdowns largely affecting women, children, & the poor. boycotting the murderous status quo by refusing to be an exploited cog in a death machine speaks to your desire to live with a moral code & i applaud you. those of you who can't leave your wage slavery torture chambers yet, hang in there. this boycott movement is huge & it shouldn't be long before you're able to choose your lifestyle without worrying about putting food on the table. solidarity is the key!

Tire of these dry ass jobs out here.

I’m getting to the point where jobs out here are plain wack (I live in the South) and working for Amazon for a year and almost 6 months proves that I need some other income better then this. I plan on starting my own business. I just checked my pending account and not much to survive off of. These bonuses is a cheap shot to anybody working here. My paycheck is gonna be wack (as usual) and I damn near applied to different jobs that do delivery and better pay. But nothing! Some jobs out here that “expect” new hires feel non existent. Since a lot of people in the USA quit their jobs that they felt undesirable anymore or just plain cruel to their well-being. It made me realize that working for Amazon and a subcontractor is a game of side quests “acting” like a main quest when it…

Catching Covid put me into a different perspective

Ling time lurker, very very very infrequent poster. Recently I caught covid and have been off work for just over two weeks. During that time, I came to the realization that I don't want to work. I work for a decent company, sick leave, pto, good insurance, vacation, etc. But upon this realization, even though I was absolutely too sick to do much, I still found time to (very strictly wearing a mask) to play with my son, work on my passion products, get my schoolwork done, I have time to myself. I get to go back to work on near the end of February if there's no further complications. I still had to go through some fine lines and red tape to even get my covid leave approved, otherwise my ass would of been fired since I burned through my remaining sick leave but I'm covered under the sick…

I finally did it

I moved to a new state in November of 2019 to start a new job with a decent salary. The company had a very generous PTO policy and health insurance was great. Less than 4 months later the world came to a standstill. Not my company, though. I work in the medical field, and we didn't miss a beat. At first, they did a great job of supporting us. Additional $1/hour, 120 bucks a day in childcare credit for anybody with kids. That lasted for 3 months. Then the surge came. Not the covid surge, though. The surge of expectations, increased caseload, additional documentation. People started quitting, and nobody was hired to replace them. We received laptops so we could work at multiple clinics and complete all the additional work at home. Morale plummeted, and we were told our raises were being cut due to the increase in pay, despite…

Any fellow burnt out graphic designers / creatives out there in antiwork?

I’ve stayed in my current job too long because I hate this profession and I know another job will be more of the same shit (been doing it for 10 years). Every time I think about changing, I read a job description for a graphic designer and I feel like I genuinely want to die. I literally have no clue what else I would do though. I’m so burnt out with working in general that I lie awake in panic knowing I still have 30-40 years left of it. Cost of living has risen dramatically where I live and I need a job that pays more. It feels like such a trap and takes me all my strength not to give into thoughts of well… yknow, being unalived.
