Does anyone have a good excuse to give an employer for not wanting to be subjected to random video calls to verify you are working?

My job is a pretty sweet work from home gig and I am not looking to just quit it if I can come up with a good excuse to get out of this. Basically the manager (because we work from home now and they no longer have the power of the office) will do random facetime video calls throughout the week to verify we are by our work computer and working on things. To be completely honest, sometimes things do slow down, so I will go out to run that 15 min errand, or take a little longer lunch. I get all my work done but if you had to put a gun to my head, sure, I probably don't work every single minute the company thinks I am. That being said, I do genuinely care about getting my work done, and would not take any liberties if I knew…

Your company is probably monitoring you through your computer. The host server for the company I work for has a monitoring program that cannot be uninstalled. I have to manually close the application every time I log in. Although, this is not about the company I work for, it’s for the host server.

Exploiting the System

When I lived with my parents, it was in a pretty high cost of living area, so I worked at a fast food place that paid I think $16/hour or something. After only a week or so later, I moved in temporarily with my sister in another city, and worked at another branch of the same fast food place. Because it was owned by the same franchising business (they own a ton of different restaurants throughout the Midwest), I was already in the system at my pay rate and they never changed it, so I was making more than the managers. The GM also gets a big bonus if enough customers filled out the survey, so as incentive she said that for every 10 surveys we get customers to fill out in two weeks, we’ll get a $50 bonus. So every customer who came through the drive thru I’d write…

I posted an OC meme that literally goes along with the sentiment of this sub. It got removed, I asked why and got muted.

My academic supervisor ripped me (student) of off $15k

In September 2020 I joined a top 5 university in Canada for a graduate program that pays me $25k a year (yeah I know shit money for Canadian but good money if you are from a sketchy place in Eastern Europe). I was told by my supervisor that “there is no point of me coming to Canada now and it is better for me to stay at home and do stuff online for the time being.” I was also told that my tuition which is ~$10k/year will be covered but I will have to pay them back once I reach here. Okay, makes sense right? I come to Canada after some time, I get the lump sum and pay my debts and go on with my life. I planned to come in Jan 2021 but he told me that “for my personal safety” it is better for me to stay…

Inside Weather Fired a Customer Support Rep Rather Than Honor Their Mistake

Inside Weather is one of those “cool” and “hip” online furniture stores. “The Most Sustainable Furniture on the Internet”. They have a 365 day refund policy. All you have to do is pay an “environmental” fee. You get it. They're not like the other places. They care about the environment! Long story short, the customer service rep confirms multiple times the refund amount prior to going through with the refund. After the furniture is shipped back, it is now discovered there was a “miscalculation” and the refund amount is actually $600 less. The manager or higher up was almost proud to tell me that they fired the customer service rep for this mistake, like that was going to be the resolution I was seeking. So they fired the customer service rep for making a $600 “mistake” that they never actually honored. Pretty gross all around.

Job interview

I called up yesterday by local burger chain in Australia. Ribs and burgers, I answered some questions on the phone then they sent me through email today, to do a 3 hour unpaid skilled assement. Which seems to be, me doing a free shift and mark off like a test for it. Is this even legal?? It seems a bit sketchy to me

What was the craziest request an employer has made that wasn’t part of your job’s normal duties?

I’ll start. My boss once called me at 9pm asking me to go to the grocery store and get her bananas, and to then deliver them to her house. Obviously I didn’t do it but that was the moment I knew I needed a new job.

First Corporate Job – I’ve Been Lied To

So last year my partner and I moved to a city, a fairly large one, and we both got jobs. Partner works at a really nice grocery store that treats their workers fairly (it's not the best job but everyone is decent, pay is good, tips are good, no complaints from my partner) and I got a job at a large global advertising company (I will be extremely vague about my work because of a document I signed) that promised a good work/life balance, lots of time off, amazing benefits, and everyone I asked during my interview said that they loved the atmosphere of working at The Company. I was lied to. I would like to take some time now to talk a little about my past work experiences and schooling. I do not possess a university degree of any sorts, I do not have a college degree by most…
