Bait and Switch Job Posting

I applied for a job for which the job description seemed perfect for what I am looking for. I put my time and effort into writing a cover letter and sending in an application. Today I got a call from the hiring person about setting up an interview. I didn’t answer the call (I was at my current job and also don’t answer unknown numbers) but I called back quite quickly after listening to the voicemail. The hiring person’s first question was if I was interested in the position if the job duties were slightly different than what was posted in the job posting. I asked how it would be different.

The “slightly different” duties included being the weekend manager on duty. The original posting was a behind the scenes office job with minimal interaction with the public. So it went from a 40 hour a week Monday through Friday office job to a 40 hour a week job that requires working weekends and doing customer service.

The hiring person prefaced this news by saying my experience would lend it self well to the reimagined position. My entire aim in getting a new job is to not work weekends anymore and to not do customer service.

I declined the interview and the hiring person seemed shock. They said they’d keep my resume on file and if they decided to hire someone for the role outlined in the original job description, they would be in contact.

It is just super frustrating to see job postings that are dishonest. I really thought the job that was posted was the right job for me. And I was definitely qualified for the job, maybe even over qualified. When I got the call asking to interview I was really excited. And yet, they decided to pull all that away from me and change the job description.
