Those who work a job that is done on a computer can do it from anywhere in the world that has a stable internet connection and access to electricity. This completely eliminates the need for office space for these jobs.
Eliminating the need to commute by car, bus, or train, can cut down dramatically on the amount of traffic and air pollution, years before electric cars make a large impact. Essential Traffic that does exist, such as taxis, emergency vehicles, and trucks used to transport goods, can more easily move on the roadways.
In addition, the former offices could be repurposed into apartments/townhomes, which would create much more housing inventory at time where there is a shortage. When the number of units expands, the cost of housing will also come down and provide further opportunity for people to have access to affordable housing.
Best of all, remote work allows someone to earn a good income while traveling/living wherever they please and spending more time with family, friends, and pets. This all leads to a higher job satisfaction and overall enjoyment of life when away from work. Also, more personal time is reclaimed when you don’t have to commute back and forth to an office.
Additional benefits are the lessening of toxic workplace issues such as office politics, drama, gossip, and harassment, as all of those things are nearly non-existent in a virtual workplace.
Simply put…for office work, remote work should be the standard as it benefits employees, businesses, the environment, and society as a whole. It’s time to be anti-office and ditch the old ways and move on to a better tomorrow.
