So I recently started a new full time job as the front desk at a healthcare facility. Initially I enjoyed the job but certain circumstances have showed me how toxic the work environment is.
Last week I got sent to the ER from my job because of a hypertensive crisis (dangerously high blood pressure resulting in symptoms such as blurred vision and fainting). The event occurred on a Friday and I returned to work on Monday. Well… learned the hard way that I clearly wasn’t ready because my blood pressure was too high that my arms started to feel numb and tingly. I left work that day and was told to not return until given medical clearance from my first cardiologist appointment that was occurring the following day.
Got the medical clearance, along with temporary blood pressure medication, and upcoming appointments for intensive tests to find the cause of the issue. I’M YOUNG! I’m only thirty, and my blood work came back all normal (no cholesterol, no high/low blood sugar, etc) and my heart rate is also regular.
My first day back I struggled significantly. Still wasn’t feeling 100% and the side effects of the medication was kicking my ass, but I did the best I could and even volunteered to stay longer to help. The following day I got yelled at by my manager for leaving too much work for the next person, and was threatened to get written up if it happened again, especially because we had less patients than usual on that particular day. I admittedly got defensive. Regardless I busted my ass again and still wasn’t able to fulfill the expectations. I straight up told my manager that maybe the job isn’t for me because clearly I can’t keep up to what is expected. She said I’m taking the criticism too personally and maybe I’m not trained enough. On top of all this, starting next week I’m going to be given additional responsibilities regarding medical charts.
Additional facts:
-
I have a masters degree, but due to pandemic, I didn’t work for awhile and getting back into the swing of things.
-
My job is EXTREMELY understaffed. The person who takes the next shift after me is given an aggressive amount of additional work regarding insurance appeals and verifications, which is why my boss freaked out on me for her having work to do in the front desk.
-
I spoke to the person who takes the shift after me, was very transparent and offered to stay longer to help them. They could tell I clearly wasn’t doing well, so they told me to go home and rest.
-
I had a physical before this job started and was in perfect health. Also never had been in the emergency room before all this either.
-
I’m thinking of leaving healthcare all together, to be honest.
Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated!!! Sorry this was long, I appreciate and adore you if you read it all. Thank you <3

TLDR: Job sent me to the ER while being a new employee of only two months. We are wildly understaffed. Upon returning with medical clearance, got yelled at and threatened to get a “write up” for leaving some tasks for the next person on shift. Although I did offer to stay longer to help and did the absolute best I could. I want to leave but feel like I may be a “lil bitch” about it. AITA?
