I quit yesterday and I feel so relieved. I don't even know how to express my happiness. I thought it was in a union job so I was saved from toxic management but I wasn't.
It's like the more you know your coworkers around the department, the more they can figure out your work performance and whether you are disabled or not i.e if you are getting only 16 hours per week, they treat you like you are receiving only 16 hours because you are unproductive.
Most people with disabilities work in the maintenance department where they clean and push carts with 16 hours of work per week. A LOT OF EMPLOYEES KNOW IT AS DISABILITY DEPARTMENT, Unlike Trader joes where all employees are required to take turns in different roles which won't highlight who you are.
I work at health&beauty care department where I was ok with my work. I get everything done on time. Sometimes I get my job done in 4 hours in my 5 hours shift. THEY HAVE PROOF ON CAMERA. But, our HBC manager always plays favorites with other coworkers and reaches the point where she was eager to kick me out of the department every time we had personality clashes not related to work. This is when she would start checking around what you did, even if a customer put things in the wrong place, she would accuse you of blindly and berate me in public. When I reported to the Union, I was told that they SHES ALSO MEMBER OF THE UNION SO THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT it. In the past, she kicked out a lot of employees from her department and fired them just because SHE DIDN'T LIKE THEM PERSONALLY. She even threatened people to get them fired.
Another issue is that my hours are cut from 20 to 16 per week out of the blue. When I tried to fight with the union to get 20 hours back, the store manager told me to clean the entire store so I get more hours, which is stupid. I am trying to get my 20 hours back from my department which was cut unfairly. Instead, I was replaced and got transferred without letting me know ahead of under my HBC schedules. I called the union had informed them what had happened. I was told that CLEANING IS ALSO PART OF THE JOB AND YOU GET YOUR HOURS while there are lots of departments in grocery stores but filled with new employees who got transferred from other stores that were closing. I figured this is why I was treated like a leftover employee. Needless to say, job openings are right on my phone so I quit yesterday.
So DON'T WORK AT STOP & SHOP. You are a lot worth it.
