After the economy crash here in Canada things have been dim, especially in the expensive cities Toronto and my home Vancouver BC. But has anyone noticed a slight positive change in the attitude of larger organizations with unions? I was hired at a non profit, and have been offered a full-time job. I will be able to make my own schedule, pick up my clients out of my car (gas paid by company), and only show up when needed (trips, meetings, training). My only restraints are no half days and no days exceeding 10 hrs (labour law allows you to work up to twelve hours on a flex contract but they want to avoid burn out). My boss and I connected on a mutual hobby of collecting cards. I held out for 1.5 years for an opportunity like this and I hope that all of you do as well. I went through so many jobs where I settled and I was not willing to “stick it out” aka being abused or treated like crap. My last manager saved garbages for 9 weeks for my shift as punishment for not working for her and I made her cry asserting my disbelief in her behaviour (professionally too I wasn’t yelling too loud lol) then I left & came upon this. My old job had no benefits was minimum wage and had not union lol. I got paid via e-transfer. Don’t ever settle in relationships, friendships and ESPECIALLY jobs, the way of the world is changing and you can only get what you want by sticking to your personal boundaries and needs! I know sometimes we can’t afford to wait but job hopping is not to be frowned upon personally and professionally it’s stupid to be judged for changing careers. Our degrees don’t guarantee us the jobs we want, it really has come down to personality & never giving up on those damn applications lol. No internal connections this time at least for me. However, I acknowledge although I’m currently under the poverty line many have larger barriers. I don’t believe in the American or Canadian dream in my case but I do wish you the best in finding a job that pays enough and fulfils some of your needs. It’s possible, if you speak up you would be surprised at the things employers are willing to try out or accommodate nowadays. Sending positivity your way #ittookme157applications.
