Boots damaged at work due to acid spill but they are making it difficult to get reimbursed

Im a worker at an analytical chemistry lab. A few months ago while putting away a bottle of concentrated sulfuric on a shelf it fell off because they had these mats that hung a few inches over the edge making it look like the shelf is further out than it is. This resulted is the bottle falling breaking and splashing on my face pants and boots. Had to go under the safety shower and everything . I received multiple burns to my body and the laces to my boots and the stitching were damaged along with the pants I was wearing. So recently the Doc martens have started coming apart where the stitching was splashed. So I followed up again and now they’re saying the only way they will consider (just consider) reimbursing me is if I can find a receipt for them from a few years ago. Also now they’re saying cuz it’s been a couple months that there is no real way to know it’s from the acid. However these boots don’t just fall apart and it’s clearly in the areas with acid damage.

This feels sketchy to me but not sure what to do about to. I would thing they would need a receipt from the replacement pair to reimburse me. This feels like a way for them to weasel out of paying for damage they’re responsible for. Any advice on how I can deal with this. Thanks in advance yall.
