I work IT support for a small business (~80 employees). Prior to this I've been with companies ranging from 5 to 4,000 employees. I have 20 years helpdesk experience, certifications from multiple professional organizations and a degree in Network Engineering. I've been with my current employer for a year and a half.
Recently the company hired a new “security admin” who never bothered to learn any of our software. He literally has no idea what helpdesk staff does and started making changes without discussing them with the team. These changes include pushing out untested settings to the entire domain and getting rid of the software tools I use to do my job (tools including remote desktop, patch management, centrally monitored antivirus).
I got pretty frustrated about not being included in this process and went to the boss (our CEO). He scheduled a conference call with other senior staff. I spoke about my role in the company and how I needed this software, and how pushing out untested changes could impact our staff. On this call the boss (siding with the new admin) made sure to point out “since HR isn't on the call” and called me a d***.
I work in an at-will state and the company doesn't even offer benefits. What's stopping me from telling them to “take this job and shove it” besides my responsibility to my family and our outrageously high mortgage?
