Boss moves us from *mostly* remote to *mostly* in office

Hey all, I’m new to the Reddit community so apologies for any errors, repeats, etc. I’m just wondering if I could get some advice: I started a new job in January that im really liking in a field that I see a future in. During the hiring process, one of the recruiters mentioned that although the company started in person, theyll be remote indefinitely and that they don’t see themselves going back to full office work in the future. One of the perks of this job is the remote work and flexibility, especially considering all the work can be done at home with little to no in person collaboration. However, those that live locally are encouraged to come into the office on fridays, especially since it’s basically a half day and the environment is fun to be around. Hey all, I’m new to the Reddit community so apologies for any errors, repeats, etc. I’m just wondering if I could get some advice:

I started a new job in January that im really liking in a field that I see a future in.

Everyone that works there is young and friendly, so we all end up hanging around more than getting actual work done, and that’s never been an issue with the CEO. if anything, he encourages it because he sees it as building that “work culture”.

At the beginning of April, the CEO announced that he’s looking into three days in office for local employees starting early may. It’s been radio silence since for like five weeks. Everyone was hoping he changed his mind on it, since no one wants to be coming in three days a week.

At the end of the work day today, he announced in a company wide email that local employees are required to come in 3 days a week starting Monday. Monday and Wednesday are full days, Friday is still a half day. He cites productivity dropping bc of remote work, but productivity has never once been an issue with us that we know of. Hes never criticized us or our work, if anything he’s full of praise. So this message seems confusing. Also, with this change he of course didn’t mention any gas stipend or raises for those that are still considered local but live at least 30 minutes away.

Do y’all have any advice on what can be done or how to bring this up in almost like a public forum setting? A lot of people are worried they’ll actually get LESS work done since they’ll be distracted with socializing in the office. There’s a good amount of trust between some of the supervisors and us employees, so we could probably get their support in some way. I wouldnt consider leaving this job or moving outside the area to stay remote since I’m a recent college grad and live with my parents.

Also, I understand how lucky I am to even have a job I like right now that’s still hybrid. In the grand scheme of things, this is basically a drop in the ocean. I’m just a little frustrated and know that all my coworkers are too lol

Thank you in advance!
