Let me start off with some background. I am 22 years old and have been setting tile for a couple of years now.
My current employer of about 8 months has been irritating me for a while now at this point. No benefits, once a month pay, sub par wages, being late himself, and lack of organization. All at the same time complaining how “this generation doesn’t want to work”
Yesterday he told me that he was hiring me a helper who will start tomorrow(today as I’m writing). I was visibly annoyed. If you are going to have me be responsible for someone else as well as be training someone, I deserve more money.
This morning I told him that I was not happy for the exact reason listed above. I told him it was not okay that I was making similar pay to the person I am training. I was then told the helper was making $14/hr – below my state’s minimum wage. I said “this is not okay” and he left me alone on the job site for the day to train my helper.
I get a call about an hour later of him coming up with bullshit ways he “takes care of me” to which I reply that with more responsibility should come more money. He told me to leave and take the rest of the week to think about what I’m saying.
So here I am, at my small apartment, about to send a resignation text without any work lined up for the future. I will not allow myself to be treated like shit and given additional responsibilities without adequate pay increase. I will not be taken advantage of because I am young. I have been nothing but dependable and honest for this guy and this is how I get treated.
