Boss set ‘projects’ for employees in our (service industry) department that are looking suspiciously unpaid

Manager of department has set small projects for each employee to improve our department such as making plans for rooms or sourcing new equipment. The majority of us are paid hourly but it’s implied that we would be researching outside of work hours. Boss didn’t mention anything about pay. The problem is, my task is due on the day of my appraisal (chance of starting training towards a promotion). What do I do?
