Brother got fired 2 months after catching covid

My brother who's just been with the company for 5 months has just been laid off yesterday. He was doing a great job and found critical problems in the IT system, which led to the company correcting it's mistakes. Then, he caught covid 2 months ago and influenza a month ago, debilitating his day-to-day life. Yesterday, they told him they were letting him go, but that he still had to work during the notice period. They literally emphasized this point, that he was to work throughout the notice period. According to my now spiteful brother, they phrase-dropped this several times. And he even got told by his manager that he had to attend meetings. All I can say is, fuck this really. EDIT: He only took 2 days off in the 5 months he was employed. He was also forced to cut a day by half for missing a morning…

He was also forced to cut a day by half for missing a morning meeting despite working the whole day. This happened several times as well. He was working despite being sick.

EDIT 2: He said it was due to “budget reasons” but that the company was expanding. I told my brother I've heard this “budget reasons” excuse from my own work experience from other workmates. I told him it's just bullshit HR talk.
