Can an employer make you “voluntarily” quit your job when they take the ability to WFH away?

My husband and I work for the same company and they transitioned to remote work during COVID. It’s the slow time of year for our job and they are looking for ways to cut expenses (insurance claims adjuster firm). My husband is consistently listed as one of the top performers on his team. Over the past few days they have began having meetings with literally everyone in his department telling them that their performance is sub par and they have to come back to the office if they want to keep their jobs. A lot of people live out of state and simply can’t do it, like ourselves. Also, over the past week management changed the production standards and told no one. Tasks that they had five days to complete they now have two and they put everyone on a report of mishandling their work tasks and are using that as evidence of their poor production. Management is telling those that choose not to come into the office that they have to voluntarily choose to quit the job themselves.

I think that they plan to report it that way to unemployment to screw them out of collecting so they don’t have to pay the claims. My husband’s meeting is later this afternoon – anyone have any info on how to handle this? The company is based in Alabama, and we live in a different state.
