Just a little bit of context, I work for a unionized grocery store. They put up a sign saying that other stores have been caught selling tobacco products and not asking for id if the person is under 40. Management said that there might be people coming undercover from head office to check that proper protocol was being followed. When I first started at this place they told me to ask everyone for ID but then when I asked a customer for ID my supervisor said I didn’t have to do that for everyone. Management said that the employee who sells without checking ID even if the person is visibly over 40 will have to pay the fine from the government themselves which could range from $375+. I’m wondering if this is legal for the company to do. For reference, I work in BC where the legal age is 18 if that is relevant. Thanks!
