Can I go to a shop and ask the workers if they’re unionized?

I'm returning to the states soon and want to do my best to avoid visiting non-unionized stores. Is this something I can ask of the workers when I enter an establishment or do unionized workers avoid discussing this out of fear of union busting efforts? Genuine question.
