Can my boss make me drive to get the mail in the morning and drop off after work?

When I first started at my job, the post office was right down the street from my work so they had me picking up in the morning and dropping off after work. We just moved to a different location and now the closest post office is 10 minutes away, and in the opposite direction of where I live. I recently had to move further away from our old office because they don’t pay me enough to live in the area, and it’s even further from the new office. With that in addition to gas pushing $4/gal, I really don’t think they should be asking me to do this without providing me compensation for gas. Anyone familiar with the legalities of this kind of thing?
