Can’t Catch a Break

I had a mental breakdown at work a couple of weeks ago and was stupidly honest with my supervisor. I went into her office in tears and explained that I do suffer from depression and that I seriously need time off. She made a small joke about how I need to use my remaining vacation time because sick time is for being actually sick… I ended up going on FMLA with a note from my doctor (the appointment ended up costing me $150 after insurance). Of course federal FMLA doesn’t pay but my state offers FMLA also (which we pay into) and they do pay; however, they are extremely back-logged with claims and my case has yet to even be assigned. I called HR and explained to them that I simply can’t afford to be out of work for a month with zero pay. Basically, their offer was for me…

I called HR and explained to them that I simply can’t afford to be out of work for a month with zero pay. Basically, their offer was for me to completely wipe out all of my accrued PTO. Which I had no choice but to accept.

Now, my partner has been resentful of me for taking time off and is miserable toward me. What for? My bills are paid. I technically still have a job. It’s just sad that our society is set up to discourage any kind of break unless you can afford it… What comes after this? Back to the 9-5 until I end up in a psych hospital. They say money doesn’t buy happiness; however, it can buy you your fucking time back.
