I’m in mobile so apologize for errors in spelling/formatting.
I (28f) work at a Japanese bookstore in NYC, if you’re from here you know which. Before I applied for the job I read a bunch of reviews on Glassdoor that said you’d be treated like shit on the bottom of their shoe if you’re not Japanese.
I decided to ignore that, as I’ve never personally experienced racism, because despite being Hispanic I look very white. It was maybe a month into me working there when I realized what those reviews meant.
Anyways fast forward to now. Since I started working there I’ve improved various things, especially their displays to make them more shoppable and moving old product around to make it move. So I asked for a full time position that they’ve been having trouble filling.
When I was interviewing for it they talked down to me a lot. And implied I’d have no leading abilities. I pointed out I’ve been a manager at the largest bookstore in the country, which surprised them. They then implied I wouldn’t be getting the job. Instead they offered it to the kid that just started maybe 2 months ago because he’s a guy and Japanese. Despite earlier saying you needed to work at least a year before being promoted. Their only other candidate is ANOTHER man who previously abandoned the job in the middle of holiday season with zero warning or reason.
I spoke to someone else that’s been there longer than me and he says the last time a girl applied they also turned her down.
Does anyone think this is cause for a lawsuit or is everything too circumstantial?
If this ain’t the right place for this sorry. Didn’t know where to post it.
