Let me state, when I started working here, we were told we could wear casual attire to the office. We are allowed to wear jeans (within reason, not booty shorts/with holes in them or workout clothes. Office appropriate things.) and more relaxed attired.
But the hoodie is where they drew a line.
My jacket I usually wear got soaked in motor oil. The bottle had a leak and it was everywhere — including me when I pulled my jacket on. It was everywhere and soaked right into the fabric. I had a college hoodie in the back of my car that was clean, I just picked it up from school. So, I went into work, went to the bathroom, cleaned up and tugged it on. I don’t have clients/conferences/and most of our reps work from home, and BESIDES we can wear jeans. What’s offensive about a hoodie?
Apparently everything.
I was out of the bathroom for less than ten minutes and getting yelled at by some guy. It didn’t matter what my excuse was, I was being unacceptable and he harassed me to take it off. (Which I said no too. I’m 23F. I had no shirt on because that felt gross from my jacket.) low and behold, an hour later, everyone was getting a notice about what we could or couldn’t wear. Hoodie seemed the most offensive thing in the book.
Which prompted me to ask, “am I supposed to just go home? Because I drive an hour in and an hour home. I’ll just take PTO for the rest of the day instead of making this trip twice.” It’s cold in the office. I didn’t have a change of clothes.
No one said anything to that comment.
Flash forward to today, I wore a gray shirt with my school logo on it (because I came from class, AND it’s within the perimeters of the dress code work issued) and was accused of it being a “workout shirt” because it was gray…. Meanwhile, other people are wearing graphic t’s. My school logo is just offensive, lmao.
Like, I don’t get it. Jeans are cool but some guy wants to dictate what I wear and how I wear it without harassing anyone else. I’m just over it. Write me up. If you won’t buy my new wardrobe, shut up.
