So recently I’ve been applying for jobs, and I noticed particularly with the food service jobs, they demand and insist on an in-person interview. They won’t talk over the phone. And they are usually pretty quiet about revealing the pay rates. Why do you think they do this? Is it to: 1. See your physical fitness when you show up, and potentially discriminate illegally based on that. 2. To put a high (hourly) number in the job ad, then low-ball you when you get there hoping you just “give in” and accept the low rate of pay. 3. To test who’s really desperate enough to take their crap job so they don’t have to worry about discontent?
Who wants to go to Careerland???
I just accidentally tipped thinking that my tip was going to the server when it in fact was going to a nonprofit. Which I assume the business gets a write off for. If I had known I wouldn't have tipped. Is this illegal in Massachusetts?
Are Boomers getting blamed in error?
Put down the torches and pitchforks, and hear me out… please. I'm gen x, parents were boomers. On here I keep reading on how bad the Boomers are, and how they don't understand today's generation. I grew up late 70s to mid 90s. Both my parents worked. I watched Cosby Show, Family Ties, etc.. Most of those shows off the “ideal” family, both people worked. I grew up in a world where it was normal for both parents to work in real life and media (Those parents were boomers). But people on here keep talking about boomers act like if if a woman works she is a failure, or how their boss talks about how they had it so easy and thinks that's the way it is. In 2022 boomers are 58 to 76 years old. So I payed attention today in my video meetings (of which I have a…
So I was with the company for just under six years. Recently quit early Feb. 2022 Got last paycheck late Feb 2022. Had to wait to pull my 401 benefits till they notified Fidelity that I was no longer an employee. Saw today that they put my end date Sept 2016. So basically saying I only worked there a year. Which scales down my earnings considerably. I was fully vested when I quit. Is there any legal action I can take?
Selling out?
I have been a k-12 teacher in the private school industry for 10 years. I love teaching and feel it is my calling. But we get paid shit despite the enormous endowment at our school. And this won't get any better. Not to mention workplace culture and exploitation of workers is rampant. Hence why I want to leave. Although I should mention I have also applied to other schools in the area that seem better places to work in general. A friend of mine referred me to a job they have in recruiting. It offers commission but has a base salary close to my current job. I clearly have never worked for the money but given the state of the economy and the clear indication that we are headed in the opposite direction of anti-work/anti-capitalism…I feel like I have no choice but to take this job if offered to me.…
I recently had a conversation with a HR Director for a position where I was advocating for a significant increase in pay. The HR Director went through their Remuneration Policy as well as their Bonus policy. This is a multinational pharma company that has billion's of dollars in revenue. They said that the 15% bonus is “pretty much” guaranteed subject to individual performance. The HR Director then asked “in light of this, would you be open to negotiating your salary expectations?”. I took this to mean, since you are obviously getting a bonus will you lower your initial salary expectations? Always say NO to this. A bonus may be highly likely, but if it is not part of your base remuneration, it is NOT PART OF YOUR SALARY. Don't feel pressured to lower your own value because of a potential bonus. Instead, potentially say something along the lines of “I…
I am scared of working
As the title says, i am scared of work, i already worked as a seller but now i know that my mental health is at its worst place (plus i am autistic), i am 23, i live in mexico, hustle culture here is so present. I want to start my own business where i only work by myself because my social anxiety doesn't allow me to talk to people without feeling that i am going to puke after my hours. i don't know what to do seriously, i don't feel ready to work again but my mom is pressuring me because she doesn't want to support me anymore and she is tired of me. Thankfully i live at my grandparents house, the bad side is that they don't treat me that well but at least i don't pay rent. When i tell people about me being so scared of work…
I applied to this “ethical” “natural” small-business juicery place in my little city in vermont (not naming names) as a college student. they told me that they were flexible with the hours and that they would need a weekend shift and a weekday shift in the job listing. I applied for PART TIME. They knew I was enrolled in 18 credits. I was interviewed and the interview went great and they told me that the next step was to work a shift that was fully paid to see how I work (it was procedural for the store). I agreed only because the person there was highly optimistic that I was going to be hired and I made it apparent that I would be quitting my prior job in order to fit this working shift into my schedule. so I worked the shift, and they basically had me do labor all…
