Advice – My contract states I’m required to give a 2 month notice period when resigning. I’m concerned my employer will turn round and fire me before those 2 months is over.

Hey everyone – so essentially I’ve had enough with an utterly toxic and unprofessional work environment that I currently find myself in. Tomorrow I was planning on handing in my notice, however re-reading my contract, I’m required to provide 2 months prior notice. I can live with this, as it gives me ample time to secure a new position elsewhere. However my concern is if they decide I’m not worth keeping on for the full two-months and simply fire me before that time, leaving me with no source of income. Any thoughts on this? Has it happened to you before? Is it even legal to do so? Appreciate the advice! TLDR: Quitting my job, contract says I have to give 2 months notice, can they fire me during this time without cause?

I’m finding it impossible to change my line of work

I'm 34 and for the last 11 years I've worked manual labour. Due to injuries and illnesses I find it harder and harder to do what I've been doing, but when I try to apply for other jobs they only recommend similar positions. It all started after my son was born. My current retail job didn't pay enough, so I quit and started working for my stepdad who had recently started his own disaster restoration company. The work was tough and the hours were long, there was also a lot of on call shifts. 60-80 hour weeks were the norm, and I usually only got time off when I was sick, which usually came from working long hours on mold remediation or sewer backup job sites. I could probably make a much longer post about how horrible my time was there. Eventually, sick and tired (literally) I left to find…

I was lied to.

I worked at a job that, at best, was decent. I was paid fairly well, but with everything going on, it was stressful. I was in a manager position and had to deal with typical manager stuff. I like to consider myself a good leader, as I am understanding. You had to call out? Sure, that's fine. Your life is important. You had to leave early? Sure, take care of yourself. I was getting massive pressure from higher-ups for being too “empathetic.” After 5 years of this and a pandemic, I thought it's time to find something else. There was a lady who joined my company during the pandemic in an upper management role. She was not the best at her job and frankly annoying. But I am nice and pleasant to everyone because you never know who will be your boss one day. She left the company after 6…

Is it legal to not be paid for job training? (US)

My wife is starting work with a company doing insurance sales from home. It's hourly with commission. They are requiring her to do a week of unpaid training classes 5 hours a day via zoom meetings. Is this legal? She says that almost all places are like this but I think it's wrong to not pay someone for their time when almost everyone is living paycheck to paycheck. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Guys, is it normal if we have cams in the employee breakroom and some facing lockers?

I live in Quebec. I work for a unionized grocery store. I looked-up some laws, but I'm unsure if it is legal for a company to have cams in the employee breakroom. (My bosses were telling me sometimes that the owner was looking trough the cams and he was angry that some people took 31mins breaks instead of 30. He'd also tell them they did a shit job because some employees would be doing nothing while being paid (it's illegal to use any cameras for employee surveillance here. It's only for theft and crimes surveillance.)

Rant for those older GenXers

I'm in my 50's. I have no college degree and unless I seriously qualify for enough grants and magically have 8 extra hours added to my day to study, I probably won't ever obtain said degree. I've been working clerical type jobs since my 20's and have had mostly really bad experiences. I've had CFOs demean me in front of the entire office, underlings stab me in the back resulting in job loss (after 5 years with that company with stellar reviews), demotions for no reason other than change of management. The list goes on. Fast forward to now. I am working from home for a local company for a job that has gotten pretty unbearable and is making me feel that I want to scream pretty much every day. My spouse has been encouraging me to look elsewhere, maybe a job in an actual office again. Maybe drive an…

Pay Transparency Regulations should not apply only to federal contractors and subcontractors.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) published a final rule on September 11, 2015, revising the regulations implementing Executive Order 11246, as amended at 41 CFR Part 60-1 to protect employees who inquire about compensation from discrimination. More specifically, the regulations prohibit federal contractors and subcontractors from discharging or otherwise discriminating against their employees and job applicants for discussing, disclosing, or inquiring about compensation. The regulations became effective on January 11, 2016, and apply to all covered contracts entered into or modified as of that date. Additional information about the regulations is provided in the following Frequently Asked Questions. anyone who has an idea for a new law is encouraged to contact their U.S. representative or senator to suggest it. Ask your local representatives to enact this so it applies to all employers, private sector and local governments alike. It should not apply only…

Got a new job offer that pays substantially more, old company asked if they can counter…

So I’ve been waiting to finally leave this job due to an overwhelming mountain of issues (incompetent management, outdated tech, terrible systems/culture, etc.). Found a new job at a pretty well known company that is at least growing and addresses some of these problems, with a significant pay bump and title change as well. My manager asked if they can counter to keep me and asked me to throw out a number. With no intent to stay, I gave them my minimum threshold to see what number they would throw out. I have been pretty underpaid at this point due to performing the tasks of two jobs while earning the salary of the lower-paying one. The minimum threshold I gave them was 35% higher than my current salary and within market range for the higher-paying job I’ve been performing job functions for. Instead of countering they asked if I could…
