Spending strike

I often hear talk about the impact of general strike… But is there a reason nobody discusses spending strikes? Consumerism rules after all. It seems to me that most work is no longer nearly as essential to the economy as spending has become. Evidenced purely by the billions handed out to keep people going around their monopoly board while out of work. Outside of essential employees striking, wouldn't it be more impactful to show up for your work/salary your company's income well goes dry?
