Clocking out three minutes after my schedules ultimately cost me 150 dollars a week.

So my company has a rule that you can’t clock out more than 2 minutes past your schedule time as it is considered time theft. When you attempt to clock out, a notice saying a supervisor needs to punch in their number pops up. Your supervisor can get in trouble for enabling you to work past the two minutes. So if you think you will need more time to finish your task, you have to alert the supervisor so they can change your work time by a few minutes so you can clock out without a supervisor override. So I was working, knew I needed a few extra minutes and alerted my supervisor. She forgot to update my time so the time clock wouldn’t let me clock out. She refused to override because she didn’t want to get in trouble so she had to change my time, wait a few minutes for the system to update my time and clock out. It still wouldn’t let me and because she did not want to override and get in trouble, I had to keep waiting until it finally let me clock out. This took a half hour.

So backstory..I am scheduled to work 40 hours a week. But I took on an extra hour a day because my job is temporarily offering double pay for overtime instead of regular time and a half. I get paid 15/hr (minimum wage where I live) so for one extra hour a day, I make 150 a week….

the next day I get called to the office where I am scolded for getting an extra half hour of overtime. I explained that I actually tried to clock out at 5:33 not 6:00 but the supervisor made me wait until the clock accepted my punch. However, the manager did not care and said that they were revoking my extra hour because it was a privilege and I shouldn’t get an extra hour of work making double pay if I still can’t finish my work in time.

All of this because my job has decided that two extra minutes a day is time theft.
