Clueless early 50s coworker thinks a 22 year old employee has saved $100000 working for him for minimum wage

Early 50s coworker honestly believes a 22 year old employee at his small grocery store has saved $100000 working there for minimum wage. He was ranting today that all of the restaurants in town have “help wanted” signs up and no one will take the jobs because they’re receiving $600 a month from the govt. I had had enough of listening to his bullshit so I said to him there is a simple solution to the problem, just offer to pay the workers more fucking money. He went into a long rant about how he “knows better” because he’s a small business owner blah blah blah and he’d have to increase prices even higher if minimum wage went up, its $11.50ish here, no one would shop there anymore and he’d have to close. I informed him that less than 9% of Canadian workers earn minimum wage, prices are going up…

I informed him that less than 9% of Canadian workers earn minimum wage, prices are going up regardless, and said I wouldn’t fucking work for that either, also straight up asked him if he would? “Well of course not.”

He started saying how this 22 year old girl works at his store, moved out into her own apartment at 18, pays her own utilities, car insurance, food, etc without help from anyone because she’s a hard worker.

Whether she actually has it or not is not important to the story because this guy honestly believes she’s done it working for him, in four years.

I called bullshit. Said that’s impossible.

To earn $100000 at $12/hr takes 8333 hours to just gross $100000.

If she’s earning $12 x 80hrs = $1920 per month.

80hrs x 26 pay periods = 2080 hours per year.

2080 x 4 = 8320 hours in four years.

Remember she’s paying rent, utilities, phone, car insurance, & food by herself.

She hasn’t worked enough hours to GROSS $100000 at his fucking store, let alone SAVE $100000 working there. Never mind covering all of her expenses as well.

After I pointed that out he still says I’m wrong and she’s a hard worker and she’s done it.

This is a generally smart guy, we work in a technical job.

How can someone be so blind to reality?

At least he thinks she’s a hard worker.
