Colleague passed out due to extreme heat

Just wanted to share something that happened almost a year ago. This was not in the US btw. I helped the husband of my previous co-worker get a job at my current company. I was assigned to be an on-site team leader and he was assigned at a warehouse. Before being assigned to a client, I kept telling my boss to provide proper ventilation in our warehouse, including industrial fans and ACs, as it was extremely hot (summer) and the guys who work there always complain that they can barely breath when working there. I was so worried about heatstroke as it's not uncommon during this time of year. Boss said no, it's too expensive, and that we're going to get rid of this warehouse anyway once one of the major projects are done.

So one day, I got a message from a colleague that my friend passed out due to extreme heat. They informed our boss and his reaction was, don't call an ambulance or report it anywhere as the company might get in trouble, since several people didn't have work visas, let alone work permits. So they did some first aid on him and sent him home. His wife (my previous co-worker) had him checked on a hospital (out of their own expense) and sure enough, it was heatstroke. He ended up missing a week of work because of the effects on his body.

At the time, I felt so guilty that because I was the one who helped him get the job, it would be my fault of he died.

A week later, CEO visited the office, told her about the issue with the warehouse, and arranged it to be equipped with the proper ventilation. Everything was good but that incident changed how I view the company's priorities.

Thanks for reading.
