Colleague Pay Question (reposting on burner)

Hey guys, Looking for some advice. TLDR at bottom. I started at company X about 6 months ago, my hiring manager left the company the day before I got there, so in the now 6 months without him my coworker essentially trained myself and 2 others who started around the same time. I am in a “senior” role, however we perform the same exact duties just silo’d by seperate brands under the umbrella. He was approached yesterday with prospects for a promotion to my role, with slight changes to his workload, but essentially already what he is doing now minus some data entry we will be passing off to an intern / entry employee (if we ever hire one). And we both are essentially taking on responsibilities of the manager they aren’t backfilling, due to “ongoing reorg efforts.” So now we are both performing the responsibilities of the brand manager…

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice.

And we both are essentially taking on responsibilities of the manager they aren’t backfilling, due to “ongoing reorg efforts.” So now we are both performing the responsibilities of the brand manager as well as execution.

Now here’s the question, I am paid ~$90K, which in my opinion is quite fair for what I do, I was in a strong negotiation position upon accepting the offer so I haggled and squeezed all that could be squoze, he however started at a lower title, ($60k) and when approached with his promotion to my level, was offered $65k. A full $25k less than myself, and $15k less than our third counterpart (who arguably is useless in his own right but we won’t go there.)

This coworker is what I would consider a friend of mine, and is a fantastic coworker. We have helped each other out picking up the slack for no manager and useless 3rd wheel, and it is to be honest disrespectful that he was offered such a low rate for being so kick ass.

If he walks, my workload will double. And who knows when or who they would replace him with so I am motivated to keep him purely because I enjoy working with him and he is a huge asset to our team. I could give a shit about the company metrics and told him if he gets an offer to walk, but I would love to keep working with him (at the rate of of he deserves) how can I go about this conversation with our director that they are essentially fucking this up and if he walks our team is fucked?

I appreciate any advice, and keep sticking it to the man.

TLDR: coworker does same work as me, gets promotion to my title, and is offered 30k less than I make due to his previous salary being entry level. Want t talk to boss and get him his $$.
