Company claims they do not give raises.

Hi all, so my wife started working for a health insurance company back in August or so. Started off at $20.25 Hr. She was supposed to get a performance review last month but they said they won’t be doing it for new hires. So she found out that she was getting paid less then the people around her even though she is doing more work then some. Who are getting paid 7K more. While initially this was okay because she was inexperience She is constantly being praised on her work performance. Ability to learn and and get everything done. Out performing the peope who apparently have so much more experience in essentially all aspects. So she requested a meeting with her manager to ask for raise.

In which she was informed that the company does not do raises. That is her managers 25 years has not seen a single person get one. They give a single bonus once a year that is 7.5 percent of the individuals yearly salary. But you have to be there a year. Which she will miss by two months or so.

Her step mother who works higher up in the company is telling her that this is a normal thing in a corporate such as thing and she just doesn’t understand that. She stats that she should have never asked for a raise to begin with especially not for being employed less then a year. Also that She should be grateful to work for this company and that they aren’t supposed to be discussing pay and bonus amounts.

Her First employee agreement never stated the 12 months to get a the bonus nor does it mention never being able to get a raise.

Is this normal? I have always worked manufacturing jobs so it is not my area, however a company that simply denies any raises seems like a huge red flag too me.

Any advice on how to go about this further?
