So, my company hired me one year ago. I have been doing different kinds of things. My boss told me he wanted me to see a little bit of everything. My main task though had been doing something totally out of my field of carrier (degree) in which I wasn’t learning ANYTHING (I guess no one else wanted to do it).
They decided then, 5 months after i was hired, that I would replace a senior (66 years old) that is going to retire soon. He has been doing this job for years and it’s in the IT area. A quite of large responsibility. He takes care of an entire activity that only him can do.
Me and him would do some exercises, sometimes, because I had other (useless) stuff to do and he had too.
The training has been really scarce for the amount of responsibility he has and the type of things he deals with.
These last days my boos asked me how things were going because I would need to be operating alone soon. I kinda of freaked out because the training has not been enough and they are trying to give a junior the job of senior that does that for many years and want me to learn those things whilst doing other things.
When they hired me obviously they never explained I would be replacing a senior (because I think they decided later, I don’t know). But my point is:
Am I exaggerating in getting upset by having to replace a senior without proper time for training (I’m not even graduated in IT and I don’t have much experience with the things he does) whilst also having to do other things? I’m a junior, they are paying me the minimum wage for my category.
Should this senior be replaced by someone with more experience/time in the company?
In this first year I was trying to ASSIMILATE the company and the job. We are talking about the IT group and a 10.000 people company.
How can address that with my boss without looking like I don’t wanna do the job?
