Comparing my summer job on an ice cream truck to working a fast food job at Dairy Queen

Last summer I worked on an ice cream truck, got to sit around drive around wherever I thought sales would be good. Handing out ice cream everyday all summer long making people happy was great. The pay was 15 an hour but my boss always increased it once I hit a certain amount of sales. And for every $100+ sales I got another increase. Days where I sold under $300 was $15 $400 16 and the few days I reached $500 $17 an hour. Tips were amazing, most customers tipped $1-$3. Parties they tipped $20. I was bringing home $115-$180 in cash a day for 6.5-8 hours of work. Couple times I made $200ish day before labor day I made $265. Couple months ago I started at Dairy Queen. $14 an hour no free snacks like the smaller business of an ice cream truck. I can work 25-30 hours and…

Couple months ago I started at Dairy Queen. $14 an hour no free snacks like the smaller business of an ice cream truck. I can work 25-30 hours and make about half of what I made last summer. Bosses said today we can’t even make our 50 percent off food anymore because workers are adding extras and not paying for it according to the owner who owns 5 stores in the state. Yes YOUR HARD WORKERS are paying for small drinks and getting mediums. They’re adding an extra scoop of Oreos to their ice cream, they’re adding an extra patty to their burger. The same hard workers that brought you $7,000 in sales on Sunday but we don’t even get a thank you. But alright I’ll make my co workers a shake and add extra strawberries and upgrade the size even though they paid for slightly less. Ontop of it the owners of this DQ charges $1 or so more on every item compared to other dqs in nearby towns so I always hear customers complain about prices here.

I can only hope to find another good summer job. No wonder these places have a crazy high turn over rate. I already laugh at customers and bosses who freak out on long wait times, like okay come work with us then. We only had 4 people on shift Monday and one was training.

It’s crazy how different you’re treated. Working harder and getting less pay is so strange. Had to find a quick job but fast food just ain’t it.
