Constantly being asked to pick up shifts

I have been working for my company for around a year. My boss has recently started asking me to pick up shifts. He asks me and others at least once a week. I picked up a few times out of guilt and people pleasing tendencies, but it’s starting to wear on me. This job is very mentally taxing, and working full time is plenty without picking up extra shifts. I really need my off days to recharge. When I said no to picking up a shift this week, he seemed irritated at the fact. How can I approach this in this future? I want to be seen as a good employee so I can move up in the company. However, I can’t keep picking up extra shifts when it is taking a mental toll on me.
