Coworker on stress leave told not to come to outside-of-work function

I really need an opinion here. I work at a major bank in Canada. Im a “to hell the corporate scum” kind of person myself after being in the bank for 1.5 years. So my coworker, Sarah*, has an incredibly stressful family situation going on at the moment and has court appearances upcoming. Her leave begins tomorrow. Our boss spoke with her and not only told her not to come to the bank celebration that’s put on for the fiscal year of hard work (it’s like the Oscar’s) next Friday, boss lady also spoke out of line and told her not to come to the assistant managers out of work potluck which she personally invited everyone to.
Boss lady said “think about how it would look, if you’re too stressed to come to work why are you fine to come to a party?”
If I put my manager hat on, I can kind of understand that. But at the same time I think that’s just so wrong. Everyone knows what’s going on with her family, and wouldn’t bat an eye if she came to either event. I feel like this is so demoralizing.
I’m going to talk to the boss about it tomorrow, any advice?
