Coworkers found out new hires are getting paid more and are bugging us new hires about it. Told them to take it up with manager but she said manager is unaware about our pay. Is this possible?

Long story short, I got hired with a handful of other staff (I’ll call them batch 2). Coworkers who have been working there for a while (I’ll call them batch 1) were apparently getting paid less than us, an information discovered by one of the new hires. Why she asked about their pay was beyond me. Anyways now batch 1 is bitter and upset obviously. I got sent home early today because I tested positive for the virus but in the evening one of batch 1 texted me and the conversation went like this: Batch 1: Are you getting x amount? Me, obviously bewildered at this question but not too much since I know one of batch 2 has zero sense of confidentiality: Yes. Batch 1: are you sure? manager was surprised when I brought it up. Batch 1: can you make sure?

Me, getting annoyed at this point but trying not to convey it thru text: Manager should know this since she’s part of the hiring process. Can she go and ask HR if it’s an issue?

Batch 1: Manager wants me to confirm with new hires first before she goes to HR.

At this point I’m just annoyed beyond belief. I worked in HR for 3 years. I know hiring managers supply the HR with information such as the pay rate during the hiring process. Either I’m working in an incredibly dysfunctional company or she is lying?

So my question is, are there actual companies with managers who have no idea about their pay rate?

I’m going to be off work for 5 days. Should I contact HR about this also? Any advice?
