Paramedic here. I have been talking with a couple of my fellow medics, and a possible opportunity to start our own ambulance service has appeared. Like many healthcare workers, we are exhausted, burned out, and tired of our skilled labor being exploited for peanuts.
I made the suggestion that we should start an employee owned co-op ambulance service. One where employees own the company and share in the profits, not some multi-billion dollar corporation or single business owner. Where our patients come before profits. Where workers are respected, paid well, given plenty of vacation time, and are supported when injured or ill.
This idea was received surprisingly well.
Now, the pragmatic portion of this. All these ideas are all well and good, (Im not a member of this sub for nothing) but how to execute? Ive never even heard of an ambulance service run like this. Ive seen non-profits, some of which are just as corrupt as a corporation, but not a co-op.
Could I please be directed to some reliable resources that describe different ways of accomplishing this? My searches have only found sites that seem focused more on a retail type environment, or something very small. Im hoping for something that will scale larger as the company grows.
I would love some advice. Thank you all for your time.
