“culture team” in the company

I joined a new company a month ago and I was surprised that there was a “culture” department whose job is to organize “fun activities” or some other bullshit. I think this is just some corporate sugarcoating and they are just glorified cheerleaders, so I told this to my friend, and he replied that the culture team exists “to establish the people-centric culture”, and that they are essential for the survival of the company, and that i should be thankful they exist bcus some other companies dont care about culture. I was thinking that if other companies dont care about that then this is obviously a bullshit job, but that guy was angry so i didnt say that to him.
