Curious what your experience is/was

My daughter worked at a large box store (rhymes with Rosco) and when she was hired, she told them she was a full time university student and only wanted to work 24 hours a week. They constantly scheduled her for 36. She kept mentioning it was too many hours, but they kept scheduling her for them. Then she told them she couldn’t work because we were going out of the country for a family wedding. Apparently you can’t schedule time off. I was baffled. What sort of company doesn’t allow a part time employee to basically say “I won’t be available these days”? The final nail in the coffin was she told them this fall she had a heavy course load and was only available four days. Nope. You have to be available five. So I told her to quit. The final nail in the coffin was she told them this fall she had a heavy course load and was only available four days. Nope. You have to be available five. So I told her to quit. She had a friend who also worked there who was joining the military and asked to go on limited part time as he was prepping to leave. Nope. So he quit. Now, months later, she’s hearing a lot of people she worked with have also quit for similar reasons.

This seemed like such a great place to work pay and benefit wise, and seems so successful with multiple employees, I’m curious if this was just bad management at one store or is this something that is at every location? I’m in management myself and I can’t imagine this being a successful way to handle part time employees, which I believe, is the majority of the staff. Not allowing employees to tell you in advance they aren’t available seemed to lead to multiple people calling out daily.
